General Information:

The disease, schistosomiasis, also called fever, is caused by the blood-sucking trematodes of the Schistosoma genus.
Affects all age groups.

Human infection occurs when swimming or bathing in contaminated water.
Cercaria falls on the skin of the potential host and penetrates the blood vessels.

They circulate in the host's circulatory system, passing through the pulmonary and portal vessels sequentially, maturing and turning into adult forms.
Typically, pronounced hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, dysentery syndrome, bloody diarrhoea.

Chronic stages of the disease develop fibrosis and liver cirrhosis, liver failure, portal hypertension and ascites.
The risk of developing liver cancer, gallbladder carcinoma, severe anaemia and malnutrition is significantly increased.
