General Information:

Hepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is one of the three most common causes of viral hepatitis (the other two are hepatitis B and C viruses). The virus is extremely resistant to external conditions.

Unlike other forms of viral hepatitis, hepatitis A usually runs mildly to moderate and its duration is not great; a distinctive feature of this disease is that it generally does not chronic (ie it does not last long and does not remain constant with periods of exacerbation and subsidence).

The Hepatitis A Assay is performed by measuring antibodies (immune response) against Hepatitis A - IgG and IgM class.

Anti-hepatitis A antibodies-IgG are indicative of an infection and are detected for the rest of their lives. They are protective in nature, and it is impossible to re-infect. They are also found in immunized patients.
Anti-hepatitis A antibodies-IgM is a marker for fresh infection. It is also appropriate to test the liver enzymes (ASAT, ALAT and Gama GT), bilirubin and urine-general chemistry.
