General information:

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus belonging to the group of herpes viruses. It proliferates only in lymphoblastic cell lines from B-lymphocytes of man and great apes, exhibiting a weak cytopathic effect. Epstein-Barr virus is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis. The disease is characterized by angina (an infectious process involving the palatine tonsils), generalized lymphadenopathy (enlargement of the lymph nodes), hepatosplenomegaly (enlargement of the liver and spleen) and characteristic blood count.
The following markers are investigated:

  • Epstein - Barr virus (Human herpesvirus 4, HHV-4) IgM - main marker. Indicates an acute infection. It is prescribed when mononucleosis is suspected.
  • Epstein-Barr virus (Human herpesvirus 4, HHV-4) IgG – indicates past infection. These antibodies remain in the body for life
