General information:

The test determines the concentration of valproic acid in the blood; the goal is to maintain a therapeutic level and monitor toxicity.
Valproic acid is a drug that is primarily used to control certain seizures by reducing their severity and frequency. It may be prescribed in combination with other antiepileptic drugs such as phenytoin or phenobarbital. The blood valproic acid level should be maintained within a narrow therapeutic range.
