The factor is a protein that binds to a tissue factor, initiating the coagulation cascade, which contributes to the formation of a clot. Disease due to a deficiency of the factor is called Alexander's Disease, inherited autosomally recessively by both parents, and men and women suffer equally.
Symptoms are similar to other deficiency states of blood coagulation factors. It occurs with variable weights - from intracranial hemorrhages during the first months of life to mild bleeding in various systems and organs.
