General information:

This enzyme is involved in energetic metabolism. It can be found in almost all cells in body-most high levels are in heart muscule, kidneys, liver, lungs. 

It is analysed in cases of tissue damage, liver and hematological diseases. It can also be used as a marker for the progression of a disease process: staging, prognosis, response to treatment in certain types of cancer.

Higher levels of LDH are signal for cell damage in different diseases:

  • hemolytic anemia
  • megaloblastic and pernicious anemia
  • infectious mononucleosis
  • meningitis, encephalitis, HIV
  • sepsis
  • acute renal failure
  • acute liver failure
  • wound
  • fracture
  • lymphomas, testis's cancer
  • pancreatitis

Sometimes LDH levels can be changed without serious conditions:

  • physical overload
  • hemolysis
  • patients with increased platelet levels
